art for the soul
Wendy Wahn - Potter/Artist
A long time ago I read a book in which the author talked about a potter making the clay sing. The idea of clay singing, saying something back to the viewer, intregued me. Years later, I began my journey into clay, wanting to make the clay sing. The rest is history.
I took my first pottery class in the summer of 1988. It took a great deal of time and practice before I could make pieces that were centered, round and light weight. Pottery has many metaphors for life. For example, when I am centered, my pots are centered.
My greatest honor is being asked to make ware used in churches. When I am making pieces for worship, I will pray or sing parts of the liturgy in which the piece(s) will be used.
One of the many things I like about pottery is that it is an art form that is constantly evolving. There are many types of clay, firings, variouis glaze and decorating techniques. Each presents a new opportunity to learn, to be creative and expand one's practice.
I am a functional potter. My pieces are meant to be used and enjoyed while artfully pleasing. All work is all food safe, dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.
Professionally, I was a Middle School Science Teacher. I loved teaching and sharing the wonder of science through experiential learning. Now that I am retired, I transfer the joy of learning to my clay practice.
I work in other media as well; primarily fused glass and silk painting. While I enjoy these, I always come back to clay. That is where I feel most at home.
You can typically find me at the Cracked Pot Studio Tour in September each year. I also display and sell my work at the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan Convention each year in October. Stay in touch for other places you may be able to see my work in person.
